Mingus Johnston – (Jack The Giant Slayer – 2013).

I recently got the chance to talk to Mingus Johnston about his role in ‘Jack The Giant Slayer’. Here, Mingus talks about how he got involved with the project and how he got into acting in the first place…

MV5BMjMxMDM1NDM4MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzc0NzAyOQ@@._V1._SX214_CR0,0,214,314_Hey Mingus. Thanks for taking the time out to talk to me about your new film, ‘Jack The Giant Slayer’.

What’s the general plotline surrounding the film?

Well that would be telling….go watch the film.

Tell us a bit about the character you play in the movie…

The character’s name , or nickname is Bald! Guess why!!?? Elite kings guardian . Get to wear really cool armour and ride big horses and climb huge beanstalks.

How did you get involved in the project in the first place?

Bit of luck , bit of skill and a lot of being in the right place at the right time!! I’d been working at a hotel cocktail bar in the centre of London where I met one of the casting directors involved in the film. He was staying at the hotel , we became good friends and after a few weeks got me an audition for the film which lead to a second casting , meeting the director and then onto the film.

How would you say this film is different and unique to the original story?

Very different indeed. ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ works on a fairy tale within a fairy tale. It’s a sort of ‘Romeo And Juliet’ love story with Giants thrown into the mix. Jack is from a poor family who are going through desperate times and the Princess has her own problems being married off to someone she doesn’t love. A chance meeting and with fated twists and turns throughout the movie the taboo relationship develops , add in some danger and excitement and you’ve got yourself a movie!!

The original one is all about Jack nicking stuff of a giant at the top of a beanstalk and when the giant finally goes after him he chops it down thus killing the giant!! Poor giant I say , so you could say that they are very different stories.

The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Eddie Marsan, Ewen Bremner, Ian McShane, Christopher Fairbank and Simon Lowe – with Bryan Singer onboard as director – what was it like working with the cast and crew on-set? Any good anecdotes?

I had a blast working with all the cast and crew. Jokes were flying around left right and centre . It was a bunch of fun in general.

Let’s talk a bit about you Mingus. What made you want to get into the acting industry in the first place?

I’ve always wanted to get into acting but what finally made me get into it in the end was when I got involved in an amateur acting society helping Italians learn English though acting whilst living in Italy. Came back to study it further in London and the rest is history.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to pursue a career in the industry?

Persevere , be nice and only give up if you look similar to me and are going for the same roles!!

What’s currently on your I-Pod right now?

I’ve got a whole miss match of music ranging from Kings of Leon to Proclaimers to The XX.

If you could have dinner with three guests – (living or dead), who would you choose and why?

Oliver Reed , just because I think he would be a blast and a great laugh. Billy Connelly for the same reason and of course ..SPIDERMAN because I’ve always wanted to be him!!

If you could choose a literary character to will into existence, who would you choose and why?

Spiderman!!

What’s coming up for you in 2013?

Work I hope! Watch this space.

Thanks for the interview!
