I recently managed to get the chance to have a quick chat with Michael J. Long about his role in Steve Carrell’s new film, ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’. Here, Michael talks about how he got involved in the project, and how the film differs from other comedies…
Hey Michael. Thanks for taking the time out to talk to me. Of course we‘re here to talk to you about your new film ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love‘.
What’s the general plotline surrounding the film?
‘Crazy Stupid Love’ is a romantic comedy that centers around a married mid 40-year-old man who lives a not so perfect life with his wife and family. He discovers his wife has cheated on him and wants a divorce, and his whole world begins to unravel. He spends his lonely nights at a bar where he meets a wingman so to speak who helps him re discover himself and get sex appeal back for his wife.
How did you get involved in the project in the first place?
I was working on another set…. when they called me to work on this project I was very excited because I would be working alongside Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling, both actors whom I admire.
Tell us a bit about the character you play in the movie…
I play a bartender in the movie right at the pertinent scenes when Cal (Steve Carell) is at his lowest points in the film, trying to decipher what has happened in his life and where to go from the point he is at.
An IMDB reviewer, ‘DonFishies’ has said – ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love. is one of, if not the best, American romantic comedies of the past decade’ – would you say this is accurate? How is it different and unique?
I would have to agree with DonFishies. The reason that this film is one of the best romantic movies of the decade is because it shows the ups and downs in a marriage and how an individual has to really find themselves to keep their marriage alive and not get too comfortable.
The film stars Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, and Emma Stone, with Glenn Ficarra and John Requa onboard as directors – what was it like working with the cast and crew on-set?
It was a great experience I was blessed to have the opportunity!
Let’s talk a bit about you Michael. What made you want to get into acting in the first place?
I got into acting because with movies and TV the imagination is infinite.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into the industry?
Listen to your gut and don’t trust anyone.
What is currently on your I-Pod right now?
Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix.
What’s coming up for you in 2011/12?
Working on producing and directing one of my own projects.
Thanks for the interview!
